According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 50% of adults over the age of 30 have a form of the infection. Not only can it wreak havoc on your dental health, but it is also connected to various health problems, including heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Good oral hygiene and regular dental care can keep your gums healthy; however, a new study has found another way to prevent the infection. Here’s how a daily probiotic can support your gum health.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an infection that occurs from poor oral hygiene. Subpar brushing and flossing habits cause plaque and tartar buildup, which harbors bacteria that irritate and infect the gums. Over time, it can destroy the supporting structures of your teeth, ultimately leading to tooth loss. The infection may also enter your bloodstream, increasing your risk of many health concerns, like heart attacks, diabetic complications, and preterm delivery.

Can Probiotics Prevent Gum Disease?

Probiotics support your digestive health, but a new study found it can also ward off gum disease. Scientists measured several inflammatory markers during an 8-week study. Half of the participants were given probiotic lozenges containing the bacterial strain Bifidobacterium lactis HN019. The other half of the participants were given a placebo. Scientists found that those taking the probiotic had reduced instances of gingivitis.

Since digestion starts in the mouth, it’s logical to assume that probiotics and the microbiome could affect oral hygiene and dental health. A daily probiotic can support a healthy smile while also promoting good digestion.

How to Support Healthy Gums

Although a probiotic can benefit your gum health, it’s not a substitute for good oral hygiene. You can protect your mouth and body from the oral infection by following a few tips:

Brush your teeth at least twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste. Clean all surfaces of your teeth for at least 2 minutes.

Use high-quality floss or a water flosser to clean between your teeth at least once daily. You’ll remove plaque buildup your toothbrush can’t reach.

Don’t smoke and limit your consumption of alcohol. Both are known to increase the risk of gum disease because they affect the immune system.

Visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. They’ll keep your teeth and gums healthy to support your overall wellness.

If you develop red, swollen, or bleeding gums between your regular dental appointments, contact your dentist. They’ll stop the infection in its tracks to keep your smile healthy.

About Dr. Wanda Davidson

Dr. Davidson earned her dental degree at the University of Maryland College of Dentistry and remained there to continue her education for 3 years to specialize in prosthodontics.
