Proper Preparation: 4 Steps of the Dental Crown Process

Step #1: Discussion & Examination

Step #2: Preparing Your Tooth

Once your dentist has determined that a dental crown is the best option to improve your dental condition, the next step is to prepare your tooth. This typically involves removing a small amount of enamel so that your restoration fits and functions properly.  

This step is necessary for it to be cemented in place without looking awkward or causing issues such as bite misalignment or TMJ (temporomandibular joint) aches or stiffness.

Step #3: Making Impressions

Next, your provider will take impressions of your teeth and gums to help ensure your new restoration fits like a glove. This information will be sent to a special dental laboratory to begin building your one-of-a-kind dental crown, though it can take a couple of weeks for the finished product to arrive.

Step #4: Placing a Temporary Cover

Preparing your tooth for a dental crown involves removing  a small amount of enamel, which slightly weakens its structure.  This can slightly increase the risk of developing disease or decay or sustaining an injury while waiting for your prosthetic to be delivered. As a result, many providers recommend placing a temporary cap to protect the underlying tooth while you wait for your permanent one.
